You know what they did to SS members on the Eastern Front? Don't you? When they were captured, every soldier was checked by the Red Army for a tattoo in their armpit... if one was found, they were shot immediately! That is the truth and the reason why SS soldiers fought to the death, they knew what would happen to them if they were captured... and on the Eastern Front it was the rule that German soldiers always carried their last cartridge in the breast pocket of their shirt or jacket! Then they could decide whether they wanted to be taken prisoner by the Russians or not... they all knew what awaited them in Russian captivity. It was certain death. I was told about it myself by my grandfather. By the way, more German soldiers died in captivity after the end of the war than were killed in combat on all fronts during the war combined. That is a fact that is often forgotten today or simply not mentioned anymore! But what am I saying! You all only know the Allied narrative of the war anyway… right?

OK, that is of course the Allied view of history too! Firstly, it wasn't just Germany that was obliged to limit its army and everything else military, or in Germany's case even to banish them. Germany was forbidden from deploying tanks, an air force and other military things! But England and France were also supposed to reduce their troops and units, as stipulated in the Treaty of Versailles... only they didn't do it! The treaty, which was actually a dictate, was so extremely harsh and unacceptable against the Germans that the new German government of the Weimar Republic did not want to ratify it... even the American Congress did not ratify it because of this and made a separate peace with Germany. Of course you all know that... I'll spare you any further details on the subject, but I think you only know one side of the coin anyway... and you don't know the other side of the story. By the way, Guderian revolutionized warfare with his then unusual tactics and showed how you could use Mobile Panzer Divisions and Panzer Grenadier Div. Motorized. a quick, mobile attack and the Allies called it a blitzkrieg! Which Guderian and Rommel impressively demonstrated in the French campaign! And last but not least, a little anecdote for you. American football 🏈 was very boring until 1939 and the games almost always ended in a draw. Until a clever American football coach transferred Guderian's strategic moves from the battlefield to the football game... don't you believe it? Then see for yourself and research it. There is no evidence that Soviet spies played a crucial or any part in the German defeat at Kurst. The salient as a German target was obvious as were German preparations for the attack. The Soviet preparations were the obvious reaction to the German intentions. Manstein's plan was very winnable IF mounted immediately after Karkov but Hitler's insistance on waiting and waiting and waiting for the latest tanks doomed it to a battle of attrition rather than a lightening thrust and encirculment. But even then Manstein was making progress and was very much against giving up and abandonning the effort. Model, Hitlers favorite general on the other hand got nowhere.

My wife's father took part in the Battle of Berlin as a gun commander of an 8.8 cm anti-aircraft gun. His unit originally belonged to the Luftwaffe, but was only used in ground warfare for anti-tank defense. His gun was stationed in Berlin Wannsee near the Glienicke Bridge over the Havel and was intended to prevent tank advances from the southwest. There were fierce battles for the crossing over the Havel. Eventually his position was overrun and he was shot through both upper arms. Originally a Russian prisoner of war, Red Army soldiers threw him from the truck as he was dying. He survived without having to spend many dark years as a Russian prisoner of war. But he was a war cripple for the rest of his life. He never spoke of the fighting on the Havel. The impressions were probably too brutal. Not surprising considering the effect of an 8.8 cm anti-tank grenade on a Russian T-34 tank.

So many areas where the Germans could've turned the tide. In normandy for example. Had Rommels advice been heeded and had a Panzer division or two been stationed at the normandy beaches. D-Day would've been 10x worse than it was in our timeline and would've failed at the beaches. Or if Hitler had given Gudarian and the generals the reinforcement they need in the first push for Moscow rather than divert forces to the north and south. Moscow would've become a bloodbath but likely fallen instead of being saved. Hitler quite literally was the reason for the loss of the war.
